
For students that are just taking their first formal lesson but have some swimming experience, there are many programs that will provide a skills evaluation and then place the student in the appropriate swimming program. This can help ensure the child or adult doesn't become bored with lessons that are too basic.

Semi-private or very small group lessons can be a good mid-price option for swimmers that cannot afford private lessons but would like more personalized attention and support than in large group lessons. Not all programs offer semi-private lessons however many private pools will offer this option.

The American Red Cross is the most recognized training program for children and adults across the United States. Most YMCA and public pools will offer Red Cross level training that is transferable anywhere where the program is taught.
